Average transaction value (ATV)
Average transaction value is net sales excluding VAT for a period divided by the number of transactions (receipts): the average amount a customer spends per shopping trip.
Also calledATV, average basket value, average basket size, average sale per transaction, average ticket, basket value
Formula
Net sales (excl. VAT) ÷ Number of transactions (receipts)- Net sales
- Sales after returns, discounts and VAT.
- Number of transactions
- Sales receipts in the period, excluding voided and return receipts.
- Units per transaction (UPT)
- Total units sold ÷ Number of transactions.
- Average unit price
- Net sales ÷ Total units sold. ATV = UPT × Average unit price.

How to read it, and what good looks like
ATV is one of the three factors of sales: net sales = footfall × conversion rate × ATV. When ATV falls, first establish which sub-factor fell. If units per transaction dropped, the problem lies in cross-selling and product placement; if the average unit price dropped, the mix has shifted towards cheaper lines or discounted stock. The two call for different responses, and mixing them up wastes promotional budget.
Under inflation, nominal basket growth is not real growth. According to the Ipsos Household Panel, household spend per shopping trip on fast-moving consumer goods reached ₺334 in the first quarter of 2026, up 28% year on year; the Q1 2026 report of BİM, a Turkish discount grocery chain, puts average food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation for the same period at 33%. A 28% nominal rise means the basket shrank in real terms. Shopping frequency is read separately too: according to Ipsos, households made 124 shopping trips in the first half of 2025, 21 more than in the same period a year earlier.
The right ATV depends on format, price positioning and channel; compare within the same format and channel, against your own quarterly history, and after stripping out inflation. In Mindpera, Mind Ops calculates ATV in the same daily store scorecard as revenue and conversion; a store that leaves its band lands on its owner as a task.
| Context | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| FMCG, household spend per shopping trip, Q1 2026 (Ipsos) | ₺334 (+28% year on year) | All channels; a household trip, not a store receipt. |
| Same measure, H1 2025 (Ipsos) | ₺266 (+17% year on year) |
Where it misleads
- Adding return and void receipts to the transaction count understates ATV; how return value and return receipts are deducted is written into the definition.
- Sales including and excluding VAT get mixed; food and non-food carry different VAT rates in Turkey, so ATV moves when the mix changes.
- Corporate, wholesale and staff sales pull the average; keep them separate and track the median alongside the mean.
- The terms get mixed: some reports call the value figure "basket size". In this library, value is average transaction value and units is basket size (UPT).
Data you need

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between average transaction value and units per transaction?
- ATV is value per receipt; units per transaction (UPT) is items per receipt. They are linked by the average unit price: ATV = UPT × average unit price. A basket of 2.4 units at an average unit price of ₺33.33 gives an ATV of ₺80. Reports use the term basket size for both, so state which one a report means.
- How can average transaction value be increased?
- First find which sub-factor is weak. If units per transaction is low, work on complementary product placement, the till-point layout and bundle offers. If the average unit price is low, review the product mix and price ladder. A basket that grows through discounting can erode margin, so read ATV growth together with gross margin.
